Phoenix Lodge No. 173

Phoenix Lodge is part of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London and United Grand Lodge of England. The Lodge operates under a Warrant issued by the Antients Grand Lodge in 1785. It meets at Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5AZ. Meetings have been held in Great Queen Street since 1838, when the Lodge met in the Freemasons’ Tavern, a forerunner of the present Freemasons’ Hall. Meetings are held on the second Saturday in October, November, December, February and March. The Installation Meeting is in November. Phoenix Lodge has Centenary and Bi-Centenary Warrants and has an associated Royal Arch Chapter of the same name.

Phoenix Lodge was involved in the detailed discussions regarding the unification of the Antients and Moderns Grand Lodges in 1812/3 and worked with the Lodge of Reconciliation during that period. The result was the United Grand Lodge of England constituted under the then Duke of Sussex, as Grand Master.

Phoenix Lodge is one of the London Lodges, which has the proud distinction of being involved in the Universities Scheme. This means that undergraduates at London Universities will be most welcome to approach us about becoming Freemasons. Any graduates that were initiated while at Universities in other towns or cities are welcome to apply to become Joining Members if they come to live and/or work in London, after leaving University. We give special attention to our younger members and are keen to help them to develop their interest in Freemasonry and to derive the maximum enjoyment from their membership.
